“The Principles state explicitly that AI systems’ ‘indiscriminate misappropriation of our intellectual property is unethical, harmful, and an infringement of our protected rights.”
– WAN-IFRA press statement
Principles for how AI models should be developed and used have been proposed by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and 25 member organizations. In a press statement, WAN-IFRA says its principles are so publishing can thrive and innovate “within an ethical and accountable framework.”
At the top of their concerns is potential misuse of their copyrights and other forms of intellectual property.
The principles are organized in eight areas:
- Intellectual property
- Transparency
- Accountability
- Quality and Integrity
- Fairness
- Safety
- By Design
- Sustainable Development
