‘Watson has been trained to recognize acoustic inputs—the cheers of a crowd, the sound of sneakers on a court, the impact of a ball on a racket—to determine which moments are likely to be exciting and worthy of a highlights reel.’

The WALL STREET JOURNAL reports how IBM’s Watson AI system is producing highlight reels to send on to broadcast networks from tournament play at the U.S. Open tennis matches. It speeds their availability and saves the human labour of monitoring play and packaging key moments.

Other uses of the system include helping coaches analyze player performance and defending the U.S. Open’s servers against cyber attacks.
