A DARPA perspective on artificial intelligence | DARPA

Runs 16:01

DARPA Director of Information Innovation John Launchbury gives an even-handed explanation of AI capabilities: what it can do, what it can’t do, and where it is headed. He describes AI in three waves:

  • 1st wave – Handcrafted knowledge (past and present applications)
  • 2nd wave – Statistical learning (present applications)
  • 3rd wave – Contextual adaptation (future applications)

DARPA is the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for the United States. Previous projects have included the foundations for the internet and for self-driving vehicles.
