IN THE GUARDIAN, AI specialist Stuart Russell warns large language models, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, are being deployed too fast for the good of society. He was one of the signatories to a recent open letter calling for a pause in technologies more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4 while better guardrails are put in place, joining several AI and computer science researchers. He reviews the key themes here.

Stuart Russel is a professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, a frequent speaker about AI, and co-author of the leading textbook about artificial intelligence systems.
