Researchers believe one day, quantum computing could amplify the capabilities of artificial intelligence, as well as upend other computing-intensive applications, such as encryption. Development is treated as ‘a national security priority,’ reports the Times.

Quantum machines process numbers completely differently than conventional computers. Their potential is to reduce processing times from thousands of years to days or less.
