Keynote session with John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Chief, Bloomberg | GEN SUMMIT 2019

Runs 32:19

Talk by John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Chief of Bloomberg, at the 2019 Global Editors Summit in Athens. He sees AI systems for journalism making a difference in four areas:

  • Automation of repeatable events – for example, earnings reports. Of 5,000 stories a day published by Bloomberg, about a third have some degree of automation.
  • Changing the way stories are produced – for example, rapid transcriptions or automatic translations.
  • Signalling – for example, identifying clusters in social media or anomalies in facts and flagging either for human attention.
  • Personalization – for example, including a section of ‘your news’ in a daily report

He describes how fake news comes in different forms and dates back centuries.
