A keynote talk by John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Chief of Bloomberg, at the 2019 Global Editors Summit in Athens. He sees AI systems for journalism making a difference in four areas:
- Automation of repeatable events – for example, earnings reports. Of 5,000 stories a day published by Bloomberg, about a third have some degree of automation.
- Changing how stories are produced – for example, rapid transcriptions or automatic translations.
- Signalling – for example, identifying clusters in social media or anomalies in facts and flagging either for human attention.
- Personalization – for example, including a section of ‘your news’ in a daily report
He describes how fake news dates back centuries.
