2018: 18 highlights in computer science

THE 18 BIGGEST DEVELOPMENTS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE FOR 2018 have been named by MIT’s Computer Science and AI Lab (CSAIL). They are not ranked 1-18 and instead treated as equally significant.

The list includes both new applications (e.g., cybernetic plants) and new outcomes (e.g. detection of metastatic cancer). Practices by Cambridge Analytica are included, as is Google’s natural language advance that showed a computer having human-like phone calls. Each listing links to a corresponding article.
